FAQ
What does a podiatrist do exactly and how does it work?
What does an active approach mean?
We believe that patients should be actively involved in their recovery process. Identifying the cause of the problem is key. The goal of treatment is to work together to alleviate your symptoms and keep you symptom-free. This may involve manual therapy, intrinsic foot muscle exercises, exercise therapy, following advice, and possibly adjusting your lifestyle. Depending on the condition, orthotic insoles may also be an additional option to help alleviate symptoms more quickly. A treatment plan is developed in consultation with the patient.
What is manual therapy in relation to podiatry?
In the context of podiatry, manual therapy involves the use of hands-on techniques to improve the mobility of the feet, ankles, and other relevant joints. This includes mobilizations, manipulations, and massages to relieve pain, increase flexibility, and optimize function.
From what age can I see a podiatrist?
From the age of 6, we, as podiatrists, can provide assistance. Sometimes, parents may be concerned about their child’s gait at an earlier age. If this is the case and you still want to come in, you are welcome to do so. As an exception, and often in consultation with a pediatrician and pediatric physiotherapist, we treat children under 6 years of age.
Can I do something myself for my recovery?
Yes, everyone can do something for their own recovery. The exercises you can do depend on your symptoms, foot type, and treatment goal. Preventively, it is always good to start with intrinsic foot muscle exercises to strengthen the foot core system.
Will my feet not become lazy from using orthotic insoles?
We work with corrective insoles to keep the feet as active as possible. This way, we ensure that your foot does not become lazy. With this, we provide corrections to optimize natural movement and reduce or prevent symptoms.
Is it not better to walk barefoot than in shoes?
That varies from person to person. For some people, walking barefoot can be beneficial because it can strengthen the foot muscles and improve proprioception. For others, this may be uncomfortable or even lead to more symptoms. This depends on individual circumstances such as foot type, gait pattern, and underlying conditions. If you want to start walking barefoot, it is advisable to gradually build it up. Additionally, it is important to seek advice from a podiatrist.
Is podiatry covered by insurance?
Podiatry is covered by supplementary health insurance. Whether you are reimbursed for the treatments depends on your supplementary package within health insurance. It is good to know that within Podotherapie Beld, we work with podiatrists as well as a podologist. There may be some differences in reimbursements.
Does weight affect my symptoms or gait?
Weight certainly affects the position of your feet. Especially if your weight changes over a short period, this can cause problems. Your feet bear the body weight. If you have gained weight quickly, this can cause your feet to collapse more inwards. As a result, muscles and tendons have to work harder, and there is more stress on joints and bone structures. It is important to note that the relationship between weight and foot problems is complex and may depend on individual factors such as posture, foot structure, and overall health of the individual.
