Research: An Essential Component of Podiatry

Podiatry plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of issues related to the feet, ankles, knees, and even the back. Before treatment can begin, research is conducted. In this Footnews, you can read about the types of assessments we perform at Podotherapie Beld and their purposes.

Research as the Foundation
At Podotherapie Beld, we view research as the foundation for effective treatment. Every treatment process starts with an intake conversation during which we conduct an initial assessment. This assessment includes gathering information about the problem, a physical examination, and always a video gait analysis. Through this research, we aim to uncover the significant differences between left and right and how the body compensates. It is important to connect various facets of the assessment, such as gait analysis, inspection, palpation, and functional testing. This way, the root cause of the complaint or injury can be identified, allowing for the development of a personalized treatment plan.

In many cases, clients come to us with complaints, but we also regularly use assessments for preventive purposes. Many issues can be avoided when deviations in gait patterns or overuse are detected early. People who frequently run or engage in intense sports may benefit from preventive assessments to avoid injuries.

Active Approach
At Podotherapie Beld, we work from an active approach. We see the long-term effects of actively working on correct movement patterns and gladly implement this for our clients. This means that our treatment plans aim to create the right conditions for the body to move correctly again without excessive assistance.

When we conduct an assessment, it also directly influences how we approach this research. We look at what biomechanical possibilities or limitations exist that can be addressed in the treatment plan. A personalized treatment plan often includes various exercises and points of focus for learning the correct movements and posture, as well as building strength or improving mobility. Examples of these exercises can be found in our monthly mini-series.

Innovative Research: 3D Gait and Running Analyses
We are passionate about our profession and continuously strive to develop ourselves and the field further. That’s why we are always looking for new and improved research methods that allow us to examine the human body in greater detail. During an intake session, we always perform a 2D gait analysis based on video footage. This is also why we utilize Run3D technology extensively.

The Run3D system was developed by scientists at the University of Oxford. Using infrared cameras and markers placed on the lower back, hips, knees, ankles, and feet, we create an exact digital copy of the client. While you walk or run, we record your gait pattern. The software compares your personal results to the ideal gait pattern, helping us identify risk areas or performance markers. Based on this, we can better guide our clients in rehabilitation processes, injury prevention, and improving running performance.

And After the Assessment? Once the assessments are complete, we collaboratively create your personal treatment plan. Depending on this plan, follow-up appointments will be scheduled. Follow-up appointments may include:

    • Manual Therapy: In these sessions, we treat your foot, ankle, and lower leg to optimize foot mobility.
    • Orthotic Therapy: If necessary, we may need to provide orthotics. In this case, we perform a 3D scan of the foot and create your custom orthotic by hand.
    • Active Engagement: It may also be recommended that you start working on exercises, which will be explained and demonstrated, or you may be referred to another discipline such as physiotherapy or a sports physician.

Can You Always Come to Us for an Assessment? We work closely with physiotherapists, sports physicians, and general practitioners. You may be referred to a podiatrist through these specialists. However, a referral is not necessary for podiatry or podology. These services are directly accessible, and depending on your supplementary insurance, the appointments may be covered.
